Stunning, eye-watering 4K images to soothe the soul at a time when all our souls need soothing…that is, until the inimitable Herzog pops up to jauntily remind us of our impending inevitable doom ("The warning was justified"), the meaningless of Man's actions in an infinite unfeeling universe capable of wiping us out ("They were oblivious to the sudden death of everything"), the terrifying realisation of how small a part we truly play in the order of things ("Looking eternity in the eye"), and the obliviousness with which we go about our daily lives (Planetary Defense Coordination Office, whatthewhatnow?!😲)…😰
But hey, keep calm and meteor on…amirite?!😂
Look, if you, like me, prefer your nature/quest-for-meaning documentaries to be full of stunning, heartwarming images, populated by the world's most interesting people, with a running current of existential dread running underneath all that awe and wonder, then look no further than the latest salvo in the great Herzog's thought-provoking documentaries, a genre that's as mutable and ever-expanding as the universe from whence these meteorites descend.
Of course, there's a tiny voice in my head telling me that while WH is taking us on a grand tour of these mysterious cosmic visitors, his real interest lies in the humans who are enraptured by these pieces of stardust…just a teeny, tiny thought…😏
Massive kudos to the music and the DP for those rapturous cinematic sequences, and especially to the Editor / Sound Designer / Sound Mixer Capalbo, a descendant of the legendary #WalterMurch method of doing things.
Ya know, for all his angsty German pessimism, ol' Werner does give us that ineffable(sheesh, how many "in's" in one post😄!) ecstasy of discovery, so rest assured that, as the events around us threaten to browbeat us into depressive submission and our own uneasy understanding at the back of our minds that from stardust we came and to stardust we shall return, there are always wonderful people all around us doing wondrous things…🤗
